Winterhouse is the PERFECT Middle Grade Book. This Magical Mystery has the elements of an excellent Fairy-Tale:
A mean Aunt and Uncle
A mysterious old hotel
Puzzles and Riddles
An enormous Library
A Secret Book
Kind Strangers (who become friends)
And a malevolent spirit..
Elizabeth Somers has spent most of her life enjoying books, lists, and puzzles as a way to distract her mind from her misery. Orphaned as a young girl, Elizabeth has been raised by distant relations whom she calls Aunt Purdy and Uncle Burlap. Her Aunt and Uncle are poor, disinterested, and mean. They give Elizabeth the bare minimum to survive and do not show her any affection.
When, one day, Aunt Purdy and Uncle Burlap are given money to take a vacation, on the contingency that they send Elizabeth to a far-off hotel called "Winterhouse," they jump at the chance.
Despite initially feeling abandoned, Elizabeth is surprised to discover that "Winterhouse" is the most amazing place she has ever been to. There is skiing, sledding, swimming, lectures, concerts, and lots of fun activities to pass her time. The hotel Proprietor, Norbridge Falls, is a kind old man who treats Elizabeth like a treasured guest. She even makes a great friend, named Freddy.
However, there are many, many mysteries. Like, why does Norbridge want Elizabeth to check-in with him twice a day? Why are so many people snooping around in the library after hours? What is The Book she keeps hearing about? Who is the creepy couple with the giant crate? And, the biggest mystery of all, what is this feeling Elizabeth always gets when something strange is about to happen?
Curl up in a cozy chair, and prepare for an exciting mystery and a cast of characters you will grow to love.
