Some countries have wizards, witches, sorcerers, but- in Nigeria- they have Leopard People. Leopard People are a secret society of people who are connected to the spiritual world of Magic. Most are born into Leopard Families but, occasionally, someone is a Free Agent- a Leopard Person born to non-magical people.
Sunny is one such person. Sunny was born in Nigeria, raised for years America, and recently has moved back to Nigeria. People cruelly call her an Akata, which is an unkind term used to refer to Americans of African descent. Sunny is Black, and Albino. For this, people accuse her of being a Witch. Sunny is a mix of identities and experiences- including being a 12 year old Leopard Person in a family that has no idea that magic even exists!
Balancing life as a magical person (Leopard) and a regular person (Lamb) can be exhausting. This is especially true when you and your friends have been chosen to hunt down a Serial Killer but your parents just think you are out socializing too much.
Sunny has a lot to learn about the magical world and has a great group of Leopard friends to help her along. She also has a lot to learn about who she is and what she is capable of- despite the judgment of her parents and others.
Akata Witch is an engaging coming-of-age tale of magic, prejudice, and power.
Look for Akata Warrior- the 2nd installment in the series.
